We have a national flag. It is rectangular in shape. It has three coloured horizontal stripes. Saffron is at the top, white in the middle and green at the bottom. It has also a wheel at the centre. It is blue in colour. This wheel stands for activity and progress.
The saffron colour signifies self-sacrifice, the white stands for purity and green stands for youthful vigour. It is hoisted on house tops and office buildings on important national days. The national flag is very sacred to us.

13. How you spend your Sundays:
On Sundays, I generally wake up a little late at 7 a.m. Then I wash my face and have breakfast. I sit for study and continue with it till 10 a.m. After that I have some free time which I spend on gardening and doing some odd jobs for our house.
I then take bath along with my friends in the pond nearby. After lunch, I take a small nap and get up at 3 p.m. After doing some homework, I go to the field to join my friends in games. The man I admire most is Subhas Chandra Bose, popularly known as Netaji. He could have lived a peaceful and comfortable life; but he did not do so.
He wanted India to be free. For that he suffered a lot. Once he was elected President of Indian National Congress. He left India to fight against the British to make India free. He raised an army, the I.N.A. and actually fought against the British.
His dream of an independent India came true when India won freedom in 1947. Nobody knows where he is or how he died. But he was a true leader and a great patriot. So, I like him most.
17. A Picnic:
Last Sunday, we went for a picnic on the bank of the river Ajoy. The weather was very charming. It was pleasantly cold also. We reached the spot at 9 in the morning. We hired a cook for preparing the food. The items were rice, dal, fried brinjal, fish curry, meat and chatni.
While some of us played cards, others listened to songs and music in the transistor set we carried. We had our lunch at 2 o’clock. Then we went boating on the river for some time. We enjoyed the day very much. We returned home before dusk.
18. Postman:

19. A One-day Cricket Match:
A one-day cricket match between India and Sri Lanka was played at the Eden Gardens on 3rd May last. India won the toss and elected to bat first. They scored 293 runs for 4 wickets. All the players scored nicely.
Tendulkar scored a century and Sourav scored 84 runs. Later Sri Lanka scored 230 runs and were all out. Jaisurya scored a brilliant 77, but others failed. Kumble got 4 wickets for only 36 runs. Thus, India won the match by 63 runs. It was an exciting match and I enjoyed it.
20. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose:
Subhas Chandra Bose was a great Indian patriot. He was born in Cuttuck on 23rd January, 1897. He was a brilliant student. He passed the I.C.S. Examination but did not take up government job. He joined the freedom movement and suffered imprisonment many times.
He was elected President of the Indian National Congress. He left India to fight against the British to make India free. He raised an army, the I.N.A., and actually fought against the British. For his great leadership quality people called him Netaji. He dedicated his life for India’s independence. His death is still a mystery.
21. Your Birthday:
My birthday falls on 21st August. Every year I look forward to this day with great eagerness. On this day I rise early in the morning and offer ‘pranamas’ to my parents and other elders in the family. Then I take bath and go to ‘Kali’ temple to offer prayers.
My parents arrange for a small party at our house in the afternoon. Many of my friends and relatives attend the party. Mother herself prepares some sweets and snacks on that occasion. There are lots of fun also. Everybody enjoys the day.
22. Swami Vivekananda:
Swami Vivekananda was a great Hindu monk. His real name was Narendranath Dutta. He came in contact with Sri Sri Ramakrishna and turned to religion. He became a sannyasi and toured the whole of India preaching religion.
He also asked people to be free from casteism and other social evils. He was pained to see the poor condition of the people. He wanted to spread education through religion. He established Ramakrishna Mission and Belur Math.
23. Rabindranath Tagore:
Rabindranath Tagore was a great poet, novelist and philosopher. He was born on 9th May, 1861 at Jorasanko, Kolkata. His father was Maharshi Devendranath Tagore.
For his collection of poems ‘Gitanjali’, Rabindranath was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1913. He was the first Indian to win such an award. He composed music also. He also founded Visva Bharati at Santiniketan. This great son of India died in 1941. We the Indians are proud of him.
24. Spring:
Spring in Bengal starts in mid-February and continues up to the second week of April. During this period, the weather remains very fine. The days are neither cold nor warm and the nights are very pleasant.
Spring is the season of greenery and flowers. Plants and trees put forth new leaves. The gardens are full of colourful flowers. Singing birds like the cuckoo are mad with joy. Holi is the most important festival held in spring.
But this season of flowers and singing birds brings also pox, the disease everybody fears. Still the beauties of spring make us forget our cares and sorrows. We enjoy the season very much.
25. The Sun:
The sun is a star. It is a big ball of fire. It is far from the earth. The sun gives us light and heat. Life on earth depends on it. It rises in the east and sets in the west.
The earth moves round the sun. It takes 365 days to make one complete rotation round the sun. In summer when the earth is near the sun we feel hot. For many reasons, the sun is worshipped as a god.
26. Your Hobby:
Gardening is my hobby. I prepare the soil with manure and water. Varieties of seasonal flowers are grown in my garden. During winter flowers like marigold, dahlia, rose, etc. grow in the garden.
In summer the garden looks very colourful with sunflower, tagar and jui. I take care of the garden and water the plants everyday in the morning and in the afternoon. I gather seeds and saplings from the nursery. I find great pleasure in my hobby.

The name of my village is Gauripur. It is a small village with 200 villagers living in thatched houses. The villagers are mostly farmers. There is a primary school in the village.
The post office is about 4 km away. We collect drinking water from a pond nearby. A small health centre meets our health-care requirements. We live very happily in our village.

I have an aim in life. I want to be a doctor. It is a noble profession. Most of our people are poor. They live in villages where there are no doctors to treat them. So they suffer very much. That is why I want to be a doctor and then move to a village. I am sure I shall be happy in life.

Football is my most favourite game. The game is full of actions and there is no dull moment in it. All the twenty-two players have the common aim to score goals and win the game.

30. Visit to a Book Fair:
Last Sunday, I with my friend Sandip went to visit the Calcutta Book Fair in the Maidan. We stood in the queue and bought tickets to enter the ground. Inside we saw a large number of book stalls opened by the book sellers. They were of different sizes and shapes and were beautifully decorated.
Books on different subjects such as arts, science, fiction, sports were on display in the counters. They looked so attractive in their smart covers. The stalls were all crowded. Children’s books drew the maximum visitors.
I bought one book on sports and games. The other one was a story book. We took some rest and had refreshments in a cafetaria. I enjoyed the visit to the fair very much.
31. A Fair:
A fair is an important event in our community life. It often serves as a meeting place for people living far away from one another. In a fair there are many shops selling all kinds of things like stationery, clothes, domestic items and toys.
Thousands of people gather on the occasion, and the area becomes very noisy. Merry-go-rounds, magic shows are the biggest attractions for the children. Various kinds of foodstuff and cold drinks are sold there.
When people become tired and hungry they go to these shops. People roam about in a festive mood. A fair brings us a great relief from our daily monotonous life.
32. Visit to the Zoo:
Last Sunday I visited the Alipur zoo garden with my parents and little sister Rini. Before the ticket counter there was a long queue and we had to stand for about half an hour to get our tickets.
Inside the zoo we saw many people, specially the children, gathering in the big ground. We went round the zoo and saw various types of birds and snakes, besides animals like monkeys, crocodiles, kangaroos and zebras.
We also saw tigers and lions roaring inside the cages. The most amusing incident was the elephant riding. We also had some snacks from a food stall. It was really a very interesting visit.
33. Uses of Computers:
A Computer is an electronic device that does all types of difficult calculations, keeping records and storing data for us. Nowadays computers are used in banks and supermarkets, hospitals, reservation counters, radio and television stations and also on aircraft and spacecraft.
It is called upon to prepare electric bills, record telephonic conversations, send reminders to others. Computer based telecommunication network sets up instant links with any part of the world at any time. Computers are also doing wonders in medical diagnosis and printing technology.
Typewriters are gradually making room for computerised word processors. With the help of internet connection in the computer, we can have access to the latest news and information at the click of a button. In fact, computers have done miracles in the application of science for the benefit of mankind.

I read in class VI of R. K. Mission Boys’ Home High School. Our class room is very neat and airy. It is situated on the first floor. The walls are decorated with pictures of great men, maps and charts. There are a table and a chair for the teacher.
In the corner stands a blackboard. There are twelve desks and benches. We sit on the benches and do our work at the desks. There are forty students in our class. Our class teacher is Sunil Babu, who takes great care of us. We feel very proud of our school.

Our school has a library. It is quite big and is situated on the ground floor of the school building. There are many books in it-fictions, classical books, drama, text books, etc. The books are kept in steel almirahs.
A catalogue is kept near the counter, and we choose our books from it. There are long tables with benches. We can sit there and read. We can also borrow books for a few days. Every month new books are added. One of our teachers is in charge of the library. The room is well lighted. The library is an essential part of the school.
36. Your Favourite Book:
My favourite book is ‘Abol Tabol’ written by Sukumar Roy. It is a wonderful book that contains nonsense rhymes. The book is specially meant for children. The rhymes are written in such a way that though they appear to talk on serious matters, they actually make no sense. The words are full of simple jokes.
Hilarious situations arise out of serious talks. I have read the book several times. But still I feel like reading it again and again just for pleasure. It is one of the greatest classics in Bengali literature for children. Every child should make it a point to read it.

Recently I visited a fair in our village with my parents. It was held in the open ground near the river. When we reached there, the place was already overcrowded. There were many stalls selling different items like clothes, toys, bangles, household goods, etc.

All events were hotly contested. Guardians and students assembled to encourage the boys. Prizes were given to the successful boys. We all enjoyed the day very much.

Games and sports make the body fit and strong. A sound mind can only reside in a sound body. So games and sports are necessary to attain both physical and mental health. In games players require cooperation and team-work among themselves.
These train them to be unselfish and disciplined in spirit and cooperative in their activities. Thus games and sports help to develop a strong body and mind. Games and sports are, therefore, absolutely necessary for everybody.

Bina gets up (or, is out of bed) at 5 o’clock every day. Soon after, she brushes her teeth. But before breakfast she takes her music lessons at 5-30 a.m.
She has her breakfast at 6-30 a.m. She then does her homework for school. At 9 a. m. she takes bath. She finishes her meal at 9-30 a. m. and leaves for school at 10-15 a.m.
