Pompeii was an ancient Roman city. It was located near Naples in Italy. The city was founded in between 6th century and 7th century BC.
It was once a prosperous city. In 79 AD one of the most dramatic moments of Roman history occurred. Mount Vesuvius erupted and destroyed the city of Pompeii. It was a very flourishing city and was home to around 20,000 people just prior to the eruption.

It was believed that Vesuvius suddenly started to throw up lava and rocks. Soon a cloud of ash blocked the sun out, turning day into night. The worst was still to come.
Twelve hours after the initial eruption an avalanche of hot gas, ash, rocks, molten lava broke off. The flow of this molten lava destroyed everything and everybody in its path. The speed was faster than that of a hurricane. There was no chance to escape it.

On a hot day a crow became thirsty and started looking for water. He flew here and I there and at last saw a pitcher under a tree. He flew to the pitcher. The crow thought hard for a while. He saw some pebbles lying around and then had an idea. One by one he dropped the pebbles into the pitcher. Soon the water level rose high enough for him to drink.
